3D Product Models for Amazon and Shopify: The Specs to Hit

A good render can still fail as a marketplace 3D asset. Here are the file size, polygon and texture limits to put in your brief before you commission product CGI.

November 4, 2026

A render that wins the client meeting can still be rejected by a marketplace. Amazon, Shopify and Wayfair all take 3D product models, and each has its own limits on file size, geometry and textures. If your CGI supplier was never briefed on them, you find out at upload.

Why a marketplace asset is not a hero render

A hero render can carry millions of polygons and 8K textures because it is delivered as a flat image. A marketplace asset loads in a browser or on a phone, so it has to be a single lightweight GLB or USDZ file that still looks right on a mid-range handset. That is a separate deliverable built from the same source model, and it needs its own time and budget.

What Shopify asks for

Shopify's partner checklist says to deliver GLB files, with USDZ only where a merchant needs a legacy 3D Warehouse file. Total file size should be about 4 MB, and textures for mobile web should not be larger than 2048 x 2048 px. Models need real-world scale and a PBR material workflow, and the materials should match the product's reference photos in reflectivity, gloss and transparency.

What Amazon asks for

Amazon publishes its 3D specification inside Seller Central, so check that page for current numbers. Secondary sources report GLB delivery, a ceiling of 200,000 triangles, a 5 MB file limit, PBR textures and correct real-world dimensions. They disagree on texture size, with figures from 1024 px to 4096 px. Treat those numbers as a starting point, not a spec, until you have checked Seller Central.

What about Wayfair

Wayfair does not publish a public 3D asset specification. Its standards go to suppliers through its supplier portal, so ask your account contact for the current requirements before you commission any models.

The AI-generated 3D trap

Tools that turn product photos into 3D models are improving, and a September 2026 Retail Insider piece says they expand what online retail can offer rather than replace photography. The same piece names accuracy as the key concern. Fabric, leather, finish and colour all need checking against the physical product, and the scale has to be right if shoppers will compare the model with the real item in AR.

What to put in your CGI brief

Name each target platform in the brief. Ask for a GLB with one material set and a single non-overlapping UV map. Set a file size target per platform, with Shopify's 4 MB as a sensible default. Supply real dimensions and reference photos so scale and finish can be checked. Ask for a validation pass in the Khronos glTF Validator before delivery. Then price the marketplace asset separately from the hero imagery, because it is extra work.

Quick answers

What 3D file format does Shopify need for product models?

GLB. Shopify's partner checklist says to deliver GLB files and to make a USDZ only where a merchant needs a legacy 3D Warehouse file.

How big should a Shopify 3D model file be?

About 4 MB in total, according to Shopify's partner checklist, with textures no larger than 2048 x 2048 px for mobile web.

Does Amazon accept GLB 3D models?

Secondary sources report that it does, with a limit of around 200,000 triangles. Confirm the current limits in Seller Central before you build.

Can AI turn product photos into a usable 3D model?

It can produce a starting model. Texture, colour and scale still need checking against the physical product before the model goes  live.
